| EGGS It is so easy to raise tadpoles! Just keep in mind that they will eventually need homes. It is best to give it some serious thought about what you will do with the frogs they will become. Boonie & Surfer began mating, and i was curious about the tadpole raising experience. I did a lot of research and hoped for the best. I thought it would be a wonderful thing to share with my 2 boys. The following is what i did to raise my tads, and i did not lose any. *You need a separate tank, i used a 10 gallon. Fill it 1/2 way. Add a heater and set it about 74-76 degrees F. Add an air stone set on the lowest setting possible. DO NOT USE A FILTER AT THIS TIME. *Add 1 tbsp of Stress coat to the water. Also add 1 tbsp of aquarium salt to the water. *Let this tank sit with the water for at least a day or two for the water temp to regulate, and for the additives to take effect. *Carefully add the eggs to this tank. A turkey baster works perfect for this. *After about 2 days, the eggs will 'hatch', or morph and they will cling to the sides of the tank, feeding off their yolk sac. DO NOT FEED THEM AT THIS TIME. *Once they are all free-swimming, maybe a few days later; you can add a tiny amount of food to their water. You can give them liquid fry food, or a recipe from http://aquaticfrogs.tripod.com. or you can order tadpole food from www.xenopus.com. Feed them 1x a day. *I would change the water 20-30% every other day. You don't want the water too clean. Use a cup for removing water to avoid injuring the tadpoles. Gently add water to the tank using the same cup. Just make sure the water has sat out at least 24 hours to let chlorine gas-out. *Keep up with the water changing, and feeding once a day. *When you see that your tads are starting to grow back legs, their arms soon follow, then about 1-2 weeks later their tails start shrinking. Once you notice their tails are starting to shrink, this means they are absorbing their tails. You have to stop feeding them at this time; because they won't eat when they are in this stage. It takes about a week to absorb tails, maybe less. *Once they absorb they tails completely, feed them 1x a day with HBH frog & tadpole bites. And thats it! Tadpoles grow at different rates, so it could be tricky to say when they will start growing their legs, etc. In my experience, i had froglets 35 days from the time eggs were laid, and I was told this was very quick morphing. Others can take many months to turn into frogs. RAISING TADPOLES Caring for tadpoles is easy. If you are raising them from eggs, then go to 'Raising ACF Tadpoles from Eggs' . If you just bought a tadpole, and need to know how to care for it, you are in the right place. Here are the supplies you need: *10 gallon tank with a cover.( Make sure the cover does not have any metal. Metal Ions are toxic to tads.) *Aquarium Salt- Keeps fungus in check. Helps to heal if they get a wound. But at any petstore. *Koizyme - (This product prevents Redleg, a disease that kills frogs once they get it) Order it @ www.xenopus.com *A submersible heater *Tadpole food *An Air stone- put on lowest possible setting *Stress Coat - A water conditioner that removes chlorine and metals from the water, and replaces the natural slime coating of the tads. Buy it any any petstore. *Thermometer with suction cup to stick inside of tank. Here's what you do: **Try and set the tank up at least a week prior to getting the tadpole, so the water temp can level off, and the temperature can stabilize. The last thing you want to do is shock the tadpole with cold water. Set up the tank: 1. Put the heater in the tank. *Do not turn it on yet, do so ONLY after water is in tank. Just stick it inside the tank, near the bottom. 2. Add water. Do not fill the tank all the way up. I would fill it just a little more than 1/2 way. 3. Add 2TBSP of Stress Coat to the water. 4. Add 1 TBSP of aquarium salt to the water. 5. Add 1 drop of Koizyme. (shake bottle first, just add ONE drop. Store in fridge) 6. Slowly turn the knob on the heater until you see a light go on,,, and then STOP. Wait about 24 hours, then check the water temp. Check again in 24 hours. You want the water temp to be about 75-77 Degrees F. Once the temp is stable, after several days, it is safe to add your tadpole. What to do after your tad is in his new home: *Feed your tadpole special tadpole food. They cant eat pellets yet like frogs. Feed them once a day, by putting the powder in the water. They are filters feeders and 'take it in' as they are swimming. *Every 2 days, change about 25% of the water, and add fresh water (The safest way to remove and add water is to use a large cup). Make sure the water you add is about the same temperature that the tank water is now. *Once a week add 1 TEASPOON of Aquarium Salt. *Keep an eye on the water temperature- because you might have to adjust the heater. Remember that everytime you adjust the heater, it takes about 24 hours to reflect the change. *Once a week add 1 drop of Koizyme. Watch your tadpole closely for signs of morphing. Tadpoles grow at different rates. It may only take 4 weeks for yours to turn into a froglet, while it may take another tadpole a couple of months to morph. The first thing to come out are the legs. Maybe your tadpole already had legs when you got him. How exciting! The arms come after the legs. When the arms and legs seem to be as big as they are going to get, the tail starts to shrink. **Please note** Once the tail starts to shrink, the tadpole wont eat. The tail gets absorbed into his body. DO NOT FEED HIM AT THIS TIME. Once the the tail is gone: *Remove the heater - African Clawed Frogs are cool water frogs. *Remove the air stone, because the froglets now have lungs, and will come to the surface for air. *Do a 50% water change. Add the Aquarium Salt & Koizyme *Feed your froglet HBH Frog & tadpole bites, or buy Baby Reptomin floating food sticks. *Go to 'ACF Care Sheet' for all the information you'll need from this point on. |
